NEW: Polls Show MAGA Republican Lee Zeldin is Vastly Out of Touch with New Yorkers

Published: August 2, 2022

NEW YORK – Two polls released today find MAGA Republican Lee Zeldin is out of touch with New York voters who strongly oppose his dangerous agenda to put more guns on our streets and restrict the fundamental right to an abortion. The polls conducted by Siena and Emerson highlight widespread support from both Democrats and Republicans for commonsense gun safety measures and keeping abortion rights legal.

“Voters oppose the recent Supreme Court decision to overrun Roe v. Wade and eliminate the constitutional right to abortion, 68-25%. By a larger 74-21% margin, voters say abortion should be always or mostly legal, as opposed to always or mostly illegal. Voters support a new law expanding eligibility requirements for obtaining a permit to carry a concealed weapon – including background checks with character references and safety training – 82-15%.”

“‘Even stronger, is likely voters’ view that abortion should be always or mostly legal. That view is held by 88% of Democrats, 75% of independents and 50% of Republicans, as well as at least two-thirds of voters from every region, age group, gender, race, and religion…’”

Here’s a look at Lee Zeldin’s disastrous record on abortion:

  • Zeldin has guaranteed that if elected, anti-abortion advocates would have “open-door” access to his administration and said he would appoint a “pro-life” health commissioner.
  • Zeldin applauded the Supreme Court’s decision to overthrow Roe v. Wade.
  • Zeldin has repeatedly voted for abortion bans, and currently supports a bill that would ban abortion without exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother.
  • Zeldin even voted against keeping access to birth control legal.

Here’s a look at Lee Zeldin’s disastrous record on guns:

  • Zeldin said New York “should not have Red Flag laws,” which work to prevent tragedies from occurring by keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals.
  • On Friday, Zeldin voted against the bipartisan Assault Weapons Ban of 2022, which would keep weapons of war off our streets.
  • Zeldin has advocated for repealing the SAFE Act, which prevents criminals from buying guns, cracks down on illegal guns, and bans the most dangerous assault weapons.
  • Zeldin has repeatedly voted against universal background checks and strongly opposed the recent Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first significant federal gun safety bill in decades, which supported the implementation of state Red Flag laws, tightened the “boyfriend loophole,” cracked down on gun trafficking and directed money to mental health services and school security.
  • Zeldin celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision to strike down New York’s concealed carry law and said he was “proud” to have signed an amicus brief in support of the case.
  • Zeldin supported implementing “stand your ground” laws in New York, which studies consistently show increase violence and homicide rates.
